History of the NHL's Metropolitan Division with PHP
One of the benefits of using PHP is that you can extract common page elements such as the menu and footer, and turn them into server-side includes. Using PHP functions and conditional logic, you can automatically change the page title and indicate the current page in the menu. Generating a random image on the front page also adds interest to the site.
The Metropolitan Division was created after the NHL realigned divisons back in 2013. The Devils, Islanders, Rangers, Penguins, and Flyers all came from the Atlantic Division to join the Metropolitan, while the Hurricanes and Capitals came over from the Southeast Division. Only one team came from the Western Conference, and that was the Blue Jackets, who moved from the Central Division to the Metropolitan to make it 8 teams in total.
The Metropolitan Division has produced three President's Trophy winners (Rangers in 2015, Capitals in 2016 and 2017) as well as three Stanley Cup Champions (Penguins in 2016 and 2017, Capitals in 2018).
The Capitals have won the most Metropoilitan Division titles with five, all being consecutive (2016-2020, 2021 divisions we realigned temporarily because of CoVid 19). Only two other teams have won the Metropolitan Division title, the Penguins in 2014 and the Rangers in 2015.
The Metropolitan Division has had the second most playoff teams since the league realignment in 2013 of any division league-wide, sitting behind the Central Division. Since 2013, the Metropolitan Division has produced 34 playoff teams, the Atlantic 26, the Pacific 25, and the Central with a league leading 35 playoff teams. However, the Metropolitan Division has produced the most Stanley Cup Champions of any division with three.
